A 42-year-old Omaha motorcyclist died early Monday after an SUV driving the wrong direction slammed into his bike just east of the U.S. Highway 75 north and Interstate 480 south split near downtown Omaha.

Omaha police said Mickey Riesberg died at Nebraska Medical Center after the accident occurred a little past midnight.

A 2004 Lincoln Aviator, driven by Victor Perez, 24, of Omaha was traveling the wrong direction, heading east in the westbound lanes, when it collided with Riesberg’s 2004 Kawasaki motorcycle, police said.

Perez fled from the crash scene, police said, and he was spotted as he pulled into the Ameristar Casino Hotel in Council Bluffs. He and taken into custody by the Iowa State Patrol.

Authorities said Perez was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Iowa and he was booked into the Pottawattamie County Jail.

An arrest warrant in Nebraska charged Perez with felony motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident resulting in death.

Later Monday, Perez remained in the Pottawattamie County Jail awaiting extradition to Douglas County.

Omaha police said the crash remains under investigation.

At least five hours after the crash, a part of the interstate remained closed while the accident was investigated.

According to Douglas County records, Perez has had a number of traffic violations since 2008.
