Nebraska Secretary of State says there were no election breaches here

Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale said he is confident that there were no breaches of election-related systems in Nebraska last year.

He said his office worked closely with the office of the chief information officer and with the state’s election vendors, Election Systems & Software and BPro, to monitor the security of the voter registration system and the election night reporting system.

Gale said some county election officials last year reported attempted phishing attacks on the email system used for communications among state and county election officials. He said that the attempts were unsuccessful and that it was not clear who was behind them.

Six years ago, he said there was a major, concentrated attack on Nebraska’s election systems. Although the attack was unsuccessful, the attempt was serious enough that his office contacted the FBI. He said the FBI traced the attacks through four countries before losing the thread.
