A 60-year-old Bellevue man died Wednesday after falling 20 to 30 feet at a construction site near Chalco.
Jerome “Jerry” Charvat fell from a platform at the Andover Pointe apartments at 12860 Chandler Plaza. The accident at the site, near Interstate 80 and Giles Road, happened around 8:40 a.m., according to a release from the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office.
Charvat was taken by helicopter in critical condition to Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy, where he died.
“It is with great sadness we inform you that Jerry Charvat, one of our owners, passed away unexpectedly today at one of his job sites,” the post said. “Jerry was a genuine salt of the earth guy. He was generous, kind and had a great sense of humor. Our hearts ache for Diane and his family. We will be closing the restaurant at 1 p.m. today. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.”
Capt. Chris Culler of the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office said the building where Charvat was working is under construction. Investigators are trying to determine what caused Charvat to fall, he said.
“We are gathering information and talking with witnesses,” Culler said. “We’re also checking to see if there is any video of the incident.”
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified, he said.
