SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — A Scottsbluff couple will serve prison time for child abuse, a Scotts Bluff County District Court judge ruled Thursday.

Scotts Bluff County District Court Judge Leo Dobrovolny sentenced Carlos Herrera, 35, to 48 to 60 months in prison on a felony charge of child abuse.

Jennifer Herrera, 30, was sentenced to 12 to 24 months in prison on a felony charge of child abuse.

Scotts Bluff County Attorney Tiffany Wasserburger had asked for the maximum sentence of five years for both Herreras. She said their 5-year-old son had suffered chronic abuse when the couple were arrested and charged in October 2011.

Dobrovolny said in sentencing the Herreras that the evidence “forms a clear picture of a pattern of child abuse.”

Attorneys for the Herreras indicated that they would file appeals in the cases. Dobrovolny will hear arguments from their attorneys today for their release during their appeal.
