Venezuela has some of the world’s deepest reserves of oil, but years of mismanagement and outright corruption by the regime of the late Hugo Chávez have left the nation’s economy a mess. New president Nicolas Maduro’s solution? He is creating a Deputy Ministry of Supreme Social Happiness. Just a guess, but a government-mandated happiness office will probably work about as well as the government’s other programs, which have left average Venezuelans chronically short of basic goods and medical supplies and facing annual inflation that’s officially near 50 percent.
