Amherst wants the world to know that it does more than wrestle in the winter. Sure, it had been 28 years since the basketball team reached Lincoln while the wrestling team pinned its way to six straight state titles (and counting). On Tuesday night — after yet another offensive clinic — Amherst’s words proved to be true. They do indeed play basketball. And for the first time since 1987, they’ll be playing in Lincoln.

Amherst’s press finally crushed Elm Creek. Forcing nine fourth-quarter turnovers, and hitting just enough shots, the Broncos scored the final 10 points of the game to come way with a 47-45 victory over Elm Creek Thursday night.

In the day’s opener Saturday at the Heartland Hoops Classic, freshman Holden Eckhout made six 3s and scored a game-high 26 points in Class D-1 No. 7 Amherst’s 80-57 win over Ravenna.

As a multisport standout for Amherst, junior Breyden Eckhout waits for the school year to end before playing his favorite. At this time of year, Eckhout and his teammates are concentrating on basketball, hoping to end a long state tournament drought.
