DULUTH, Minn. — Defending national champion Minnesota Duluth scored in each period and extended its winning streak over UNO with a 3-2 victory Friday night.

No. 6 Duluth, which has won eight straight against the Mavs, improves to 11-4-2 in league play and maintains its hold on second place. UNO drops to 6-8-3 and is tied for fifth.

Duluth never trailed, taking a 1-0 lead in the first period. UNO answered with a power-play goal by Chayse Primeau, who converted a rebound following a shot by Ryan Brushett for his seventh goal of the season.

Duluth got a power-play goal of its own with 12:41 left in the second period, and the Bulldogs went up 3-1 midway through the third when Noah Cates shoved a backhand under the pads of UNO goalie Isaiah Saville.

UNO pulled within 3-2 on Teemu Pulkkinen’s goal with 6:29 left. Pulkkinen, who has six goals this season, found an opening in the slot and scored off a pass from Tyler Weiss. Weiss has a team-leading 17 assists this season.

But Duluth All-America goalie Hunter Shepard didn’t allow any more as he finished with 24 saves.

Saville made 38 saves, recording at least 10 in each period. Duluth entered the game with the nation’s second-most efficient power play, but the Bulldogs went 1 of 6 Friday.

UNO played Friday without senior Dean Stewart, who was out because of illness. That snapped his streak of 80 straight games played.

UNO and Duluth will finish their series at 7:07 p.m. Saturday.
