Duke girls fourth at Seward in golf

On the No. 1 hole, a par five 468 yard dogleg left, York freshman Sam Redfern hits her third shot into the green. She would go on to bogey the hole, missing a 10 foot par putt. Redfern fired an opening nine 47 and bettered her round by four strokes in the second round to fire a 90 and take sixth place.

SEWARD – The action heated up quickly on Friday at the Seward Invite and the weather only added to the hot conditions that greeted the 13 teams at the Seward Country Club.

York's duo of freshman Sam Redfern and senior Callie Rathjen both placed in the top 10 of the individual race. The York team shot a 409 team score to take home fourth place.

“I was pleased with our team score of 409 today. Sam (Redfern) and Callie (Rathjen) played consistent golf, keeping away from the "big score" that tends to ruin a good round,” commented York head coach Josh Miller.

“Catie Bergen matched her career-best nine-hole score and 18-hole score. Every tournament is a great opportunity for these girls to learn how to manage their game. I think we can continue to improve our scores over the next couple weeks as our team gains more varsity experience.”

Winning the team race was Elkhorn South with a 328. Second went to Crete with a team score of 404 and third, just two strokes better than York, was GINW with a 407-stroke count.

In just her second varsity meet, Redfern led the Dukes with a 90 (47-43) while Rathjen fired a 49-47 for a 96 which was good for the No. 10 position.

York's Bergen had an opening round 54 and in the afternoon under even hotter conditions she trimmed her score to a 52 and took 22nd overall. Rounding out the York scoring was Whitney Staehr as she fired a 62, then dropped seven strokes from her score on the second round for a 117 and 41st place.

The Dukes' fifth golfer was Camryn Wiens and she came in with rounds of 62-63 for a 125.

The top score of the day was turned in by Elkhorn South's Nicolle Barmettler with a 69, while the second best went to Murphy Sears of Crete with a 77. Taking third was Lindsey Thompson of the E-S Storm with a 79, fourth was Lakeview's Kelsey Bignell with an 81 and rounding out the top five was Katie Hanson of E-S with an 89.

The York girls are back in action on Thursday, Sept. 5 when they host the York Invite at the York Country Club at 9 a.m.

Team Scoring: Elkhorn South 328, Crete 404, GINW 407, York 409, Aurora 410, Lakeview 424, Norris 445, Seward 449, Wahoo 484, Nebraska City 536, Shelby-RC 569. Schuyler and Fairbury did not have enough golfers for a team score.
