'Caught! Touchdown! Jordan Westerkamp!'

“Trips to the near side. Kellogg gets a shotgun snap. Final play of the game.”

That’s how Nebraska play-by-play announcer Greg Sharpe set it up Saturday, totally unaware what was going to happen but glad it would be right in front of the Husker Sports Network booth near the 30-yard line toward the south end zone at Memorial Stadium.

“Ron waiting for the wideouts to get down the field, launches a throw, down toward the goal line. Going up, ball tipped in the air … “

And with a good view of it all developing, Sharpe said he was also fortunate to see Jordan Westerkamp behind the pile and waiting.

“Caught! Touchdown! Jordan Westerkamp! Nebraska wins the game on the final play of the contest. Oooohhhh … baby!”

Sharpe said Monday that he and color analyst Matt Davison felt good about their call as Kellogg connected with Westerkamp in the 27-24 victory over Northwestern. A YouTube clip of the radio call with the BTN video had nearly 50,000 hits as of Monday night.

Sharpe said it was the first game in his play-by-play career to be decided on a final-play Hail Mary pass. Looking out from the radio booth Monday, he put it right there with calling Alex Henery’s 57-yard field goal as Nebraska beat Colorado in 2008.

Davison, of course, was involved in one of the classic finishes in Husker history with his kicked-and-caught touchdown catch at Missouri in 1997.

His own emotion came out Saturday after Sharpe’s call.

“Oh, my goodness! Oh, my goodness! What a scene in Lincoln, baby. Wooooooooo!”

Sharpe said he and Davison just did what came natural.

“There’s a great quote from Lyell Bremser, who always said, ‘There’s a lot more singles, boys, than there are home runs, so you just hope that when that home-run call comes that you’re there and ready for it,’ ” Sharpe said.
