Nebraska running back Ajay Allen out for the season

LINCOLN — Nebraska’s No. 2 running back won’t play again this season.

Freshman Ajay Allen underwent surgery Monday from an undisclosed injury, interim coach Mickey Joseph said Tuesday.

Allen was second on the team in carries (33) and rushing yards (190) through four games while adding a catch for nine yards. He also has two rushing touchdowns, flashing a potent mix of quickness and strength when he had an opportunity.

“It’s going to hurt us,” Joseph said. “But Gabe (Ervin) is a capable back of getting it done.”

Allen — a former three-star prospect — ran 11 times for 49 yards Saturday against Oklahoma before departing. Since the freshman from Monroe, Louisiana, appeared in just four games, he will redshirt and maintain the year of eligibility. Ervin, a redshirt freshman, has nine totes this year for 61 yards. Lead back Anthony Grant has 464 rushing yards on 82 attempts.

Meanwhile, punter Brian Buschini will be “fine” after spraining his ankle while making a tackle on an Oklahoma return. He limp-skipped onto the field multiple times after that and finished with six punts for an average of 40.8 yards before giving way to kicker Timmy Bleekrode late in the game.

Joseph said it was “tough” for Buschini to complete his duties amid the minor injury but he did so admirably.

“Can’t punt the ball in the middle of the field,” Joseph said. “So he better make that tackle.”

Injuries have taken their toll on Nebraska a third of the way into the season. Left tackle Teddy Prochazka is already out for the season following an injury against Georgia Southern. Co-captains Nick Henrich (inside linebacker) and Travis Vokolek (tight end) missed multiple games before returning against the Sooners.
