Opportunistic Eagles improve to 3-1 on season

Central vs. Burke

Turnovers into touchdowns was the recipe for success Friday night for an opportunistic Omaha Central team.

The seventh-ranked Eagles turned a pair of short fields into quick scores, beating Omaha Burke 20-10.

Central scored one play after Bulldog turnovers at their own 7 and 13, respectively, in the second and third quarters.

Those were two of the six Burke giveaways on the night.

“We can’t make those mistakes,” Bulldog coach Paul Limongi said.

His group led 10-0 in the first quarter behind a 62-yard scoring scamper by Malik Thompson — Burke’s first touchdown of the season — and a 26-yard Cole Frahm field goal, which was set up by a 35-yard pass from Huntore Monroe to Austan Daniels.

Those two big plays and three good gains on the final possession of the game with Central playing prevent defense accounted for 175 of Burke’s 192 total yards.

“We’ll definitely take that,” Omaha Central coach Jay Ball said. “They played hard. There were times where they just simply played harder than we did. We did what we had to do, came back from down 10. We’ll take it.”

Tre Sanders scored a pair of touchdowns just more than two minutes apart early in the second quarter, the second coming on the Burke turnover.

Sophomore quarterback Jordan Flowers converted the other takeaway into points from 13 yards out in the third.

Then the Central defense went to work. Behind relentless pressure from end Daishon Neal, a Nebraska recruit, the Eagles forced three second-half interceptions.

Neal “made some nice plays tonight when we needed it,” Ball said. “He really showed up.”

Thompson went for 102 yards on 14 carries to pace Burke, which is 0-4 for the first time since 2007.

Sanders carried 27 times for 102 yards and his two scores to lead the way offensively for Central. The Eagles were flagged for more than 100 yards in penalties on the night.

“It wasn’t pretty,” Ball said. “We’ve got to prepare a lot better and come out ready to play every play.”
