COUNCIL BLUFFS — A year ago, Emily Jones was sharing time at setter in Iowa Western’s 6-2 offense.
Team needs led to a change of positions for her sophomore season. Instead of leaving the lineup, she now plays in every rotation for the No. 4 Reivers as a hitter and back-row defender.
But, occasionally, her setting skills still come in handy. Twice in the closing moments of the opening set of Sunday’s District D championship match, Jones was in a spot to make an assist.
Her two sets led to a pair of kills by teammate Sydney Nelson during a four-point surge that gave Iowa Western a one-set lead. The Reivers went on to roll past Lake Land 25-21, 25-11, 25-15 to earn their eighth consecutive automatic berth to the NJCAA national tournament, which will be held Nov. 21 through 23 in Casper, Wyo. Aly Dawson and Nelson each had eight kills to lead a balanced attack. Kathia (Nicole) Sanchez had 27 assists.
