HOW HE PROPOSED: We went out to Soaring Wings Vineyard in Springfield to enjoy a Saturday night of live music and wine. JR told me earlier in the week that one of his friends was going to be performing and that there was a large group of our friends that we’d be meeting there. When we arrived, none of our friends were to be spotted and a man other than his friend was playing the guitar on their outdoor stage. JR told me to go ahead and get our blankets set up while he went inside to call his friend. While listening to music on one of the four blankets I had spread out for everyone, JR came out with a basket of goodies. Surprised at this sweet gesture, I stared to dig at what was in the basket: crackers, cheese, meats, glasses, wine. JR asked if I could pour him a glass of wine, and so i grabbed one of the glasses, filled it up and handed it to him. When I did this, I looked at his face and he suddenly got flustered, started rambling on about how I was his best friend and dug nervously in his pocket. Once he found the ring, he abruptly stopped his speech and said the four little words, “Will you marry me?” Of course I said “yes!” Then JR showed me the wine glasses, which were engraved with “Will you marry me?” and “Amanda Rose & John Ross, June 30, 2012.” He had meant for me to see the engraving on the glasses before I handed him the glass of wine, which is why he started to get flustered.
THE RING: JR got the ring from Borsheims. I had left a few images on our laptop of what I liked, but he ended up surprising me with a gorgeous diamond set in a square halo of diamonds with a thin diamond-filled band. HIS PROPOSAL IDEA: JR is very traditional in the sense of family and marriage. He wanted to do something unique, memorable, surprising, intimate and more importantly, reflective of us. He also has told me many times that, ” I’m only going to do this once in my life, so I’m going to do it right.” I think he tossed around many ideas and put the time and effort in to come up with the way he did it. EXPECTATIONS: I was completely surprised! I’m also amazed by the fact that he told our family and friends at least a month in advance about it and no one slipped up. OUR BIG DAY: We are looking forward to having all of our friend and family together that day to celebrate. It will probably be the only day in our lives when we’ll have all of them in one location to celebrate nothing but our love and future.
