It started as a simple venture — two guys hanging lights.
“I was working on a golf course in Colorado,” said Taylor Olberding, co-owner of Heroes Lawn Care in Omaha. “When it closed for the season, I moved back home to Nebraska and hung holiday lights. That’s how I met Mike Marlow.”
The conversations Marlow and Olberding had, during what some call “the most wonderful time of the year,” resulted in the birth of Heroes Lawn Care — and its sister company Blingle Premier Lighting — in 2014.
“The rest, I guess you could say, is history,” Olberding said.
The business’s name was inspired by Marlow’s military background. His business acumen combined with Olberding’s expertise — which includes a degree in turf and landscape management from the University of Nebraska — has helped Heroes grow into an Omaha mainstay over the past decade.
A comprehensive approach
When pondering the company’s continued growth, Olberding opined that Heroes Lawn Care’s scope of services and technical knowledge are unique in the industry.
“Top down, we have a great crew and a lot of expertise collectively,” Olberding said. “Our irrigation technicians have been in the industry over 50 years combined. We have two landscape designers, a certified arborist and certified pesticide applicators on staff.”
That expertise pairs with a comprehensive approach to yard maintenance. Most companies outsource certain aspects of the landscaping process. At Heroes, it is all in-house.
Heroes’ services include landscape design and installation, hardscape installation, lawn care maintenance, irrigation repair and install, and commercial property management. Their service providers understand each yard’s unique needs and develop a custom treatment plan.
“We know these properties,” Olberding said. “We’ve been on them so many times. We arrive knowing the needed work and what clients want out of us.”
A SMART approach
Cutting-edge technology and landscaping may not be synonymous, but Heroes Lawn Care’s approach may change that.
The company’s irrigation services — including new system installation, sprinkler system upgrades and preventive maintenance plans — are innovative and efficient.
Heroes uses SMART technology that connects irrigation systems with nearby weather towers. The systems then use forecast data to adjust watering schedules. So, if your sprinklers are set to run Tuesday but Wednesday’s forecast calls for an inch of rain, the irrigation system will not run on Tuesday.
“You can run reports on how many tens of thousands of gallons are saved in a year,” Olberding said. “It adds up. Water is not getting cheaper.”
The technology is only part of the equation. A customer-first ethos is also key to Heroes’ success.
“We take a straightforward approach,” Olberding said. “We want to understand your goals for your lawn, and we are not trying to sell you the world just because somebody is going to get a commission.
“Reliability is part of what we do. We show up when we say we will and are easy to reach. You call one phone number and get ahold of everybody.”
