Cub Scout Pack 244’s Webelos and Webelo 1’s cleaned up around Gretna Baptist Church and the creek behind it April 17. The den — made up of Gretna fourth graders — are learning about being good citizens and helping out the community and taking care of nature. As they picked up trash, they talked about how important it is to keep the environment clean for animals and for our own well being. “I think the boys were shocked by just how much trash we found in such a small area,” said Missy Ragatz, Webelos den leader. “We hope to make a trip back into the wooded area behind the Baptist church to do another clean up soon. “We found lots of Styrofoam and plastic packing material in the water which was really difficult to get out. Next time we will bring some nets to help scoop it out of the water. There were also lots of cans and plastic bottles in the grass around the trees that probably blew over from the nearby park or neighborhood. “We talked about how important it is to clean up after yourself and make sure when you set your trash outside for trash pick up day that it’s secure in the trash bin and is not going to blow all over the place.”
