Wayne State softball grounds Golden Eagles in NSIC sweep
Wayne State softball notched a pair of wins on a windy Saturday afternoon over the Golden Eagles of University of Minnesota Crookston, 11-1 and 6-1. Wayne State improves to 25-5 on the year and 5-1 in the league while the Golden Eagles move to 8-23 and 2-4 in the NSIC.
WSC scored eight runs in the second inning off several hits. Taylor Coleman earned the first two RBIs with a double to right center, scoring both Jordyn Rocholz and Lillie Timm. WSC kept adding runs to the board as the wind played a factor in this afternoon's fielding efforts for both teams. Rocholz earned the last RBI after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the eighth run in the inning.
The Wildcats scored in the third and fourth innings to build an 11-0 lead through four before Crookston got on the board in the top of the fifth inning.
Four Wildcats recorded two hits in Game 1 with Coleman leading the way with four RBIs on 2-for-3 hitting and two runs scored. In the circle, Coleman earned the win, giving up one run on two hits with seven strikeouts.
In Game 2 the Wildcats were slow to start with only two runs scored through the first three innings. Reagan Dreibelbis doubled down the right field line to score Kennadi Borngrebe in the second inning. Dreibelbis came around to score later after a Jordyn Klein sacrifice fly.
Leah Chance earned an RBI in the fourth with a sacrifice fly that scored Timm for the Wildcats' third run. Dreibelbis recorded another RBI double to right center in the fifth inning to put up the fourth run for WSC.
Chance added two insurance runs with a two-RBI double that scored Klein and Rocholz, giving WSC a 6-0 lead. UMC scored its lone run late in the final inning before Jadeyn Stahr closed out the contest, giving WSC the 6-1 win.
Dreibelbis was the only Wildcat to record two hits in Game 2 and added two RBIs, and Chance had three RBIs to lead the team. Borngrebe started in the circle for the Wildcats and recorded 12 strikeouts in six innings pitched, and Stahr recorded two strikeouts.
The Wildcats will be at home again Sunday afternoon hosting MSU Moorhead in an NSIC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
